Do you ever wonder why you can’t keep to your diet and end up going back to your old eating habits? Is your diet like a Ferris wheel ride of losing and gaining weight and it seems that you’re not getting anywhere? Well, here are the main reasons why:
1. WE EAT OUR EMOTIONS AWAY
Sure, a cup of double chocolate sundae with whipped cream and strawberry syrup is a nice treat. Sweets lift our spirits, yeah? But when we make it a habit to indulge in unhealthy food to lift our mood, it becomes a vicious cycle because, let’s face it, we encounter stressful situations every day. And if we always make an excuse to dash into the next bagel shop every time we’re in a bad mood, we can never get off that Ferris wheel ride and it becomes harder for us to reach our goal.
2. WE SEE FOOD AS A PRIZE
You aced your test today so you need to treat yourself to a double patty burger with bacon and melted cheese plus a large soda. Pretty harmless if done once in a while but if we create a reason to celebrate with food every single day, then we’ve got a problem on our hands.
3. WE FALL PREY TO QUICK FIX DIET SCHEMES
We see these kinds of ads everywhere, “LOSE 10 LBS IN 3 DAYS!” Seriously, these people will say anything to make a sale. And those poor folks desperate to lose weight will come to believe that their body is like a balloon that can shrink or deflate quickly and easily. We don’t gain 10 pounds in 3 days, so we definitely can’t lose it that fast!
4. WE’RE TOO BUSY TO PREPARE OUR OWN MEAL
Once we get up in the morning, numerous tasks await us. There are a lot of things to do, and so many deadlines to meet. So we leave out the very important part of our day, sitting down and nourishing ourselves to get the energy we need. We eat what’s readily available. Fast food chains become the most convenient venues for meals. When we eat while we work, we hardly focus on what we’re eating and almost any food will do! In reality, though, we are never too busy to prepare a healthy meal. It’s just a matter of time management and prioritising what matters most. Health is wealth, after all.
5. WE’RE TOO BUSY AND TOO TIRED TO EXERCISE.
We get this advice everywhere, “Get some exercise to shave off calories”, yet we constantly make excuses to skip a workout. We’d rather drive home quickly and watch your favourite soap. Excuses will always be there.
The daily commute to and from work or going to the grocery store could easily be a form of exercise. Instead of taking a cab or driving the car, we can use the opportunity to take a walk. Several steps each day can make a huge impact on our health.
If we can eliminate the reasons that stop us from having a healthy lifestyle then becoming healthy won’t be too difficult to achieve at all. If it’s difficult to resist those delicious treats, and losing weight seems like a punishment, then maybe we need an intervention.
We can change our whole attitude towards food and remove our cravings and bad eating habits. Hunger is different from cravings. Hunger is a physiological need that the body experiences when we lack necessary nourishment. Craving, on the other hand, is a play of the mind to satisfy our palette.
The good news is we can eliminate our cravings. We can talk and motivate ourselves, but self-talk is not effective until we master the tools and techniques to control our own cravings. Since cravings are psychological, hypnotherapy can help us lessen them. You will learn techniques to lessen your cravings and unhealthy eating habits.
