Stress during pregancy can lead to premature birth

Stress During Pregnancy May Lead To Premature Birth

In a research by the University of Lethbridge, doctors found out that mothers who experience severe stress during pregnancy may experience premature birth. The study further explains, that this could be the reason why some countries experience more pre-term childbirth compared to others.

I understand mothers go through a lot of stress and difficulties during pregnancy. During my own pregnancy, I used my training to be able to manage my stress better. It is important that stress management is taught to all expecting mothers. Stress management may be difficult without knowledge, so learning how to cope is a fundamental tool towards a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.

How Stress Affects Your Pregnancy

In today’s fast paced world, stress is a common feeling for many pregnant women. Dr. Calvin Hobel, director of maternal-fetal medicine at Cedars  Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles shares that “Stress is a silent disease. Pregnant women should be educated with how they recognise stress and its consequences.”

High level of stress and chronic fatigue may impact your pregnancy and your baby. Moreover, chances of pre-term labour and low-birthweight are higher when mothers are stressed out. Stress means you will worry continually, have sleeping and eating difficulties, and unexplainable fatigue. This behavior will ultimately mean low nutrition for your child and yourself during your gestation.

The World Health Organization, shares that up to 15 million babies are born prematurely every year. That is at least 1 out of every 10 babies are born pre-term. While there are many factors that can cause this problem like exposure to chemicals, poor socio-economic environment, inadequate nutrition, and genetics to name a few. I personally believe that stress is also a major culprit.
