No one is without fear. Some of us, though, have uncontrollable fears that prohibit us from doing something or going somewhere. We call them phobias. A phobia is an extreme fear or aversion to something.
What causes a phobia?
Phobias can be caused by psychological trauma. Usually, phobias stem from unpleasant childhood events or memories that fester and turn into extreme fears. You may have been diagnosed with claustrophobia and when you look back on your childhood, you remember being stuck in a closet during hide-and-seek.
What are symptoms of phobia?
Perhaps you’ve noticed a growing fear towards something like seeing blood. How do you know that you’re not just being squeamish? How do you know that you are actually exhibiting signs of hemaphobia (fear of blood)?
Do you experience:
- panic attacks?
- nausea and vomiting?
- trouble breathing?
- taking extreme measures to avoid the object of your fear?
If you find yourself nodding to these questions, then you certainly have a phobia. Although some people are not fond of spiders, a person with arachnophobia will do everything in his or her power to avoid encountering or approaching a spider. If, instead of jumping over a tiny spider on the ground, this person might go out of the house and refuse to return while the spider is still around, then this person has a phobia. This is why treating phobias should be taken seriously. A person with a phobia will spend money, take the longer path, or spend a lot of time just to avoid their object of fear.
Here at Blue Sky Life, I can help you examine and overcome these fears. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we will dive into your memories and analyse the possible causes of your phobia, and how to finally take back control of your life.
Through CBT, you will become more familiar with your phobia, its triggers, and your reactions. With my help, you will be able to get to the root of your phobia and its causes. Finally, we will devise strategies for you to deal with your phobia until it will no longer prevent you from living the life you want.
